The "Value of Solar" (VOST) Explained
How Your Austin Energy Bill Actually Works
Austin Energy does not use traditional ‘Net Metering.’ Instead, they use a system called the Value of Solar Tariff (VOST). If you don’t understand this, your bill will look wrong.
The 2-Line Bill System
Charge
You pay for 100% of the electricity you use at the standard rate.
Credit
You get paid for 100% of the solar you produce at the fixed Value of Solar rate (approx. 9.91¢/kWh).
The Benefit
This rate is locked in and designed to be fair. If your solar credit is higher than your usage charge, the negative balance rolls over to next month. You can effectively eliminate your electric bill, but you won't get a cash check for the excess.
How to Claim the $2,500 Rebate
Austin Energy writes a check for $2,500 to homeowners who go solar. But they make you jump through hoops first.
The 3 Requirements
Participating Contractor: You must use an approved installer (NationPro partners are on the list).
The Solar Quiz: You must take Austin Energy’s Solar Education Course online and pass a short quiz. (Don’t worry, we send you the cheat sheet).
System Size: Must be at least 3kW.
Warning: “If you install with a non-approved contractor, you lose the $2,500. Period.”
Why You Should Replace Your Roof Before Solar
Austin is the hail capital of Texas. If you put solar panels on a 10-year-old roof, you are making a $6,000 mistake.
The "Detach & Reset" Trap
When your old roof inevitably leaks or gets hail damage, you will have to pay a solar crew to remove the panels ($3,000+) and reinstall them ($3,000+) just to fix the shingles.
The Solution
Bundle a new Impact-Resistant Roof with your solar panels. You get one warranty, one loan, and zero future removal fees.
